I finished Breaking Dawn yesterday and was sadly disappointed. Stephanie Meyer, in my mind, just didn't pull it off this time. I felt like she forgot Bella and Edward's personalities and turned Bella into an old woman and Edward into an even older man. It focused too much on Jacob as the hero and Edward as the unhappy stressball of a vampire. Edward is supposed to be Bella's eternal hero, not Jacob! I didn't feel for the characters like I have in her previous books. I didn't feel much of anything except hope all the way through that it was going to get better. The book never reached a climax, was lacking emotion, was a little too sci-fi for me, revolved to much around sex, and had a too rosy perfect ending. I AM UPSET!Things I liked:
*Bella arm wrestling Emmett.
* The wedding. Very descriptive and sweet. Along with the her descriptions of Esme Island, the little cottage, and Bella's new looks. I love her descriptions.
* Bella's superpowers as a vampire.
Things I didn't like:
*That Jacob came to the wedding and she was still all over him.
*The pregnancy thing. Not because of the baby, but because of the way it was presented. I can't believe she made Edward want to abort it...Edward would have loved that baby from the second he found out about it.
*That a house full of vampires with a half vampire baby couldn't figure out that it wanted blood. DUH!
*That Charlie was still a part of the story, she should have had to sacrifice SOMETHING in this book and that was the logical person. And the whole "I don't want to know" thing got really annoying.
*That Jacob imprinted on the baby. Stupid plot line. He should have fallen in love with Leah and moved on with life.
*The name RENESMEE...come on, really? and Nessie as a nickname?
*That Bella had this awesome superpower and there was no fight scene at the end to use it. There was a conversation that lasted about 100 pages (exaggeration) that resolved everything in a neat little package so nobody got hurt.
* That Alice left and we didn't see her for most of the book.
*That she put half of the book in Jacob's perspective instead of Edwards. This story is about BELLA AND EDWARD!
*Also, that when Jacob shows up to her death bed she is so dang happy to see him. Hello, you are married...tone it down a bit. Maybe she should have shown her husband how much she loved him rather than flaunting her love for Jacob in his face.
*That Edward tells Jake to convince Bella to have a little side fling so she can have a normal baby. So much for the morals that he was trying to have in the third book.
*That the only thing you got from Edward was stress an one-liners. I'm pretty sure Leah had more lines in this book than him. The worst line of all: calling Jacob "son". UGH. Can we say cheesy?
*All the new characters. Talk about unnecessary overload.
*The whole J. Jenks thing. It didn't even come to anything and wasted a lot of time.
*That the werewolves weren't actually werewolves, but shape-shifters. Who cares?
*That the book ended up being about the hot vampire sex and forgot the sweet passionate emotion from the first books.
I could continue, but this rant is getting long. I am not just angry, I am also really sad because it had the potential to be a great book. I feel like two of my favorite characters of all time were shorted of a real true story. So I have written my own ending to make me feel better:
THE NEW ENDING OF BREAKING DAWN ACCORDING TO KATE:
* The wedding still happens, but two different things occur there. First, a mystery guest appears that morning that had heard of the interesting wedding and wanted to talk to the happy couple. This guest is a female half-breed vamp. She tells them of the potential that they have and warns them that Bella could get pregnant.
* This news makes Bella and Edward ecstatic. Bella feels like now she can still have a family with Edward and Edward is glad that although Bella has to give up her father and mother, they could still have a family of their own.
* The second event that occurs is that Seth Clearwater imprints on this half-breed. This makes the pack tied to the vampires so that no potential killings could take place. This also ticks off Jacob so he still leaves the pack.
*When Jacob leaves the pack, Leah joins him for the same reasons as before and they try and escape their troubles together. Over time they realize that they have a deep bond. This bond eventually leads to love. (Bella got over Edward enough to fall in love with Jacob, so it isn't unreasonable that Jacob could fall in love without imprinting)
* The honeymoon occurs and Bella gets pregnant. They are thrilled! Blah Blah Blah, they give it blood, and she gets hurt cuz it's strong and they realize she will have to be turned to a vamp during the delivery.
* They have a baby girl that they name anything other than Renesme. Something like Renee Charlene in order to honor Bella's parents that she can't ever see again.
*Bella is a vamp and finds that her thirst is overwhelmed by her love for her daughter making it so she can control it well. She doesn't think it is best to see Charlie as a vamp though, so they fake some sort of death and Bella is distraught, but has her beautiful family to pull her through.
*Jacob comes to tell Bella his good news that he has fallen in love (she is a vamp so doesn't love him like that anymore). He finds out she is a vampire already and isn't pleased but then sees her baby and is awestruck. As is Leah (which changes her outlook on vamps). They are so smitten that Bella being a vamp isn't a big deal and the Cullen's make Jake and Leah the little girl's Godparents.
*Irina sees the new family (Edward, Bella, Baby) hunting once and tells the Volturi. They send a small team to kill them all for their disobedience and this is when Bella realizes her power and she somehow helps protect her family from the killers. The killers (now stopped) are convinced that the baby isn't an "abomination" and go back to the Volturi leaders.
* The Volturi leaders love the idea of Bella's power and want to recruit her. They make up the problem of not knowing what the baby will turn out as (although Bella & Edward know that the baby will be fine). They all come to attack the Cullen's hoping to recruit Bella. (Alice of course sees all of this and they get one of the Denali clan to help Bella strengthen her power.)
* Various vampires hear that the Volturi are going to attack even though they know the baby is not a crazed vampire. They gather forces to help fight the Volturi whose rule that have hated living under. They aren't named specifically except maybe for the cool one with earth moving powers.
* Bella and Edward make sure that if something happens to them that Jacob and Leah will take the baby and run.
*The best of the Volturi show up to fight the Cullens and with Bella's power and the help of the woves there is an awesome battle. I don't really care if anyone dies but the Volturi is defeated. (However, only enough that they won't ever bother the Cullens again. They aren't entirely defeated so that they can still keep order among the other vampires of the world.)
* After this awesome battle they return home and Bella has a wistful moment with Edward where she takes note of all that she has given up, but all that she has gained as a vampire. She looks at her vampire family, her daughter, her husband, and her best friend Jacob and is perfectly happy. She uses her power in reverse to share this perfect moment with Edward. He finally knows for sure that she is perfectly happy and feels the same in return.
* And they all live happily ever after!
So that is how I have resolved it in my mind. By manipulating the story to my liking I feel a lot better and am not sad anymore. Now I just need to get rid of the copy of Breaking Dawn that I bought and all will be right in my world of Bella & Edward.

i dont know how you find time to read and write a blog like that. i do go to get two sentences in.
LOL! I just finished it about 10 minutes ago. I have to say, I didn't hate it, but there were definitely things I didn't like. For one thing, it was WAY too long. She kept putting in totally random stuff that was really unnecessary (J Jenks, I'm talking about you) and yeah, the ending was too perfect and cheesy. Dang it. It's the ending I wanted, but not in such a pat way. Oh well.
I started the book last night at work (someone had left it for someone else and they came and got it)and read until the Jacob part started and then just went huh what's with this. I really like your story and ending. I am in no hurry to finish it and probably won't make too much of an effort to get it.
Hey, did you open your blog? A bunch of posts just popped up on my google reader (which won't read private blogs) and I didn't have to log in just now....
I was wondering what you thought of it. I picked it up in Barnes & Noble the other day just because we happened to be there. I didn't even realize it was out. So far all of the reviews I am hearing back are similar to yours...disappointed. So I will read it but I guess I am not expecting too much. I wonder what this will do to the upcoming movie? Wonder if people (ok, woman) will be turnedoff because of the bummer last book
I'd totally read a book written by you!
Erika didn't seem to happy with it either but couldn't stop reading it. Probably holding on for it to get better.
Maybe you should publish the alternate ending, you'd probably inherit all her fans :D
