"Creativity and Compassion"

I really enjoyed President Uchtdorf's talk at the RS broadcast tonight. It made me laugh and cry and was exactly what I needed to hear. I just wanted to share a few quotes (as I remember them) from his talk that I really liked and hope to be able to better implement in my life.

* "If we trust and rely on the spirit then we will have a better capacity to create."
I loved everything he said about creativity. I often feel like I don't have any developed talents and that I can't contribute much to society. I feel that because I didn't finish school or that I'm not really super talented at anything that I have failed in some way. I liked how he showed that you don't have to play the piano, or paint, or build a building in order to be creative. There are lots of ways to create, one of which is by having children. I have created (with the help of Mike :) 2 beautiful children, and I can continue to create by raising them to be good, righteous boys. It was good to hear that by simply being a mom, I am doing something useful and changing the world. I need to have more trust and rely more on the spirit so that I can continue to create.

* "Work will cure your grief - President Hinkley"
(Work = Service)
As all of you know, a few trials have come our way lately. I have tried to stay positive and count my blessings, and I think that has helped. But what I am lacking is to forget about myself and to find someone to serve. The best way for me to stop worrying all the time and to stop feeling sorry for myself is to go to work and help someone else.

* "The number of prayers we say are of great importance, but the number of prayers we answer are of greater importance."
This ties back into serving others, but I felt like it was telling me to not just try and serve others randomly (I have to continue to care for the needs of my family while I am serving others) but to follow the spirit and serve accordingly. I need to be more prayerful of ways to be an answer to the prayers of others.

* "Those that bring sunshine to others cannot keep it from themselves" - Author of Peter Pan
I know that I could use a little sunshine. :) So what am I waiting for?

* "By being creative and compassionate we can change our discouragement, distress and grief to a life of meaning, grace and fulfillment."
I really do want all of those things. I know that my life has meaning and that I have a purpose. I know that I am supposed to be a mother and that I am doing what I should. But I don't always feel fulfilled by what I do. This fulfillment will come when I consciously make an effort to create, and as I follow the promptings to serve others.

So that is what I gleaned for myself. It was really wonderful to get the encouragement and direction I needed for the time being. And to think I almost didn't go...

I appreciated that talk too...I have always felt a love for Pres Uchtdorf. I also appreciated Sis Julie Beck's point that she made about how other auxillaries are not separate from Relief Society, but those who serve in that capacity show their devotion to RS. That helped me to shift my perspective to see that serving in YW for example is truly serving our RS sisters. There were a lot of great messages yesterday. I had to watch it from home since Rico wasn't up to par to watch the girls for me...it was still nice, the spirit was strong. Thanks for your recap!

Wow Kata! What a great recap! Sometimes I think that I do better when I read the talks. I heard the same talk; I even remember some of the quotes, but they didn't really have an impact until I read the words. Thanks!

You have such a great attitude about serving. With all that is going on in your life I hope others are there to serve you as well.

I'm so glad to hear you ended up going. It was so good, huh! I felt like President Uchtdorf brought such an energy to the meeting. He made me laugh so hard with his cooking stories.

In our sacrament meeting the next day, many women stood up and bore their testimonies about the meeting. They all enjoyed it and learned many things from it. We're so blessed to be part of a great organization like RS. That's what I took away from it, and the fact that I take RS for granted many times, when really it is such an opportunity for us to serve, grow, and become better.

Thanks for your recap. And by the way, you are great at creating. You created your entire families' 72-hour kits. Yea, I need to get going on that:)

Shelley has one too and you can access it through my site.

You highlighted the same points that I really enjoyed. President Uchtdorf was the area President when I was in Spain but it wasn't until he was called to be in the Quorum of the 12 that I discovered what a sense of humor he has. It was such a good meeting.
